Pause Briefly When Crossing Train Tracks for Shared Safety

18/07/2025

Every driver is obliged to stop briefly when crossing a railroad (KA) level crossing. A simple action like paying attention to signs, looking left and right, and waiting for the crossing gate to open is a concrete form of concern for the safety of oneself and others.

Unfortunately, many drivers still ignore this rule in an effort to save time, without realizing the great danger lurking. This is because the train requires a long braking distance and time to come to a complete stop. When a vehicle breaks through the crossing, the potential for a severe and fatal accident becomes very high.

The role of the Level Crossing Gatekeeper (PJL) at every railroad crossing is very important in securing the train's journey. The safety of road users at the crossing depends on the level of compliance of road users to obey traffic signs and warning signals at the crossing.

KAI Properti, as the entity managing a number of crossing facilities and providing several PJL officers in various regions, continues to emphasize the importance of compliance with safety rules. The presence of PJL officers is not a substitute for vigilance, but a complement to the safety system that still requires full awareness from road users.

"Safety is the main priority in the railway ecosystem. We urge the public not to rush, but to take a few seconds to stop and ensure it is safe before crossing the tracks. This one small action can save many lives," said Plt. Corporate Secretary of KAI Properti, Ramdhani Subagja.

Rules related to safety at level crossings are also regulated in Law Number 23 of 2007 concerning Railways, Article 124, which states:

"At a level intersection between the railway line and the road, road users must give priority to the train's journey."

Meanwhile, Law Number 22 of 2009 concerning Traffic and Road Transport, Article 114, asserts:

"Vehicle drivers must stop when the signal sounds, the crossing gate begins to close, and/or there is another warning."

KAI Properti invites the entire community not to ignore signs, not to break through crossing gates, and to make safety a culture in every journey. Because behind one decision to stop briefly, there is a safe train journey.

Sincerely, Plt Corporate Secretary of KAI Properti Ramdhani Subagja

PJL as the Front Line of Railway Safety, KAI Properti Urges Road Users to Obey Rules at Level Crossi...

18/11/2025

Jakarta, 19 November 2025, KAI Properti reaffirms the vital role of Level Crossing Attendants (Penjaga Jalan Lintasan/PJL) as the front-line personnel responsible for ensuring the safety of train operations at level crossings. PJL officers are tasked with ensuring that railway tracks remain safe, free of obstacles, and ready for train passage, allowing trains to operate without risks stemming from road user activities.

Under the supervision of KAI Properti, PJL officers conduct full monitoring of crossing conditions, including opening and closing the gates, providing safety signals, and ensuring that no vehicles, objects, or public activities threaten the safety of train operations. The primary focus of PJL is to secure the train’s journey, while the safety of road users depends heavily on each driver’s compliance with crossing regulations.

Ramdhani Subagja, Acting Corporate Secretary of KAI Properti, emphasized that train safety cannot be separated from the discipline and dedication of PJL officers. He explained that PJL personnel work to fully secure the track before a train passes, and optimal safety can only be achieved when road users obey the signs, signals, and instructions given by the attendants. Ramdhani also reminded the public not to break through the gates, not to stop on the tracks, and to always prioritize train movement, as trains cannot stop suddenly. Public compliance is an essential part of collective efforts to maintain safety.

Beyond their operational duties, PJL officers demonstrate a high level of dedication as they work in a 24-hour shift system, including during nighttime and harsh weather conditions. They are responsible for ensuring that gates function properly, conducting visual inspections of the tracks, and coordinating with train operation teams when potential hazards are identified. Their presence directly contributes to the smooth flow of train services and forms a crucial part of the national railway safety system.

KAI Properti is committed to enhancing the quality of level crossing management through continuous training, safety programs, and improvements to supporting equipment and tools for PJL officers. These efforts represent the company’s support for the operational activities of PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero), as well as concrete steps toward ensuring safe and reliable train journeys.

KAI Properti encourages all community members to be more disciplined and cautious when crossing railway tracks. While PJL officers safeguard the safety of train operations, the safety of road users ultimately depends on their own compliance. By obeying the rules, train journeys remain safe, and the public is protected from accident risks.

Warm regards,
Acting Corporate Secretary of KAI Properti
Ramdhani Subagja
